Nine months later – between Ramadan, Eid and Easter
Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Easter and a work trip to Kao have shaped the past few weeks.
Yes, I actually speak a few languages, but for now, let’s stick to German.
Hi there!
I’m Aya – yes, that’s right, Aya, not ‘Ah jaa’ and certainly not ‘Eier’. I’m 19, I’m from Berlin, and I’ve recently finished school – or perhaps it finished me! Oh well.
I’d wanted to avoid rushing straight into university after school for a long time, instead doing something that makes sense, allows me to grow personally and lets me see a bit of the world at the same time. As someone who loves to travel and is open-minded, with a healthy dose of curiosity, tolerance and respect for other cultures, it quickly became clear that volunteering abroad would be just the thing!
The time has now come for my FSJ: I’m heading to Indonesia, specifically the island of Halmahera, where I’ll be working at a university. I’m looking forward to gaining fascinating insights into Indonesian university life and engaging in cultural exchange with people who will broaden my horizons – and perhaps I’ll broaden theirs a little too.
What motivates me? It’s not just about giving; it’s also about learning — about the world, about others, and about myself. I’m looking forward to the challenges and those little and big ‘aha’ moments, and to everything that this time will bring. Here on the blog, I’ll regularly share my experiences with you – along with stories, thoughts, and hopefully a few funny anecdotes from my time in Halmahera.
See you soon!
With love,
Aya
