A new chapter begins

This blog is intended to give my family, friends, supporters and anyone else who’s interested an insight into my voluntary service and new experiences in Jordan.

So, who am I? My name is Felix, I’m 18 years old, and I’m from Roßdorf, a small, little-known village near Darmstadt. I’m involved in a theatre group in my local community and I play football at the weekends. I also love listening to all kinds of music, depending on my mood.

Having successfully completed my A-levels, I now have the opportunity to undertake development work abroad and expand my social and cultural horizons.

In August, I will be taking a step outside my comfort zone by travelling to Jordan to spend the next ten months at the Theodor Schneller School in Amman, the capital of Jordan. There, I will support the teachers in their work with children and young people. The TSS is a boarding school for children from challenging family backgrounds, and it promotes peaceful coexistence and interfaith dialogue between different religions.

I am really looking forward to experiencing Arab culture and language in Jordan. However, I also have worries and fears as soon as I think about my voluntary service: How will I cope with problems and challenges? Will I be accepted and welcomed? How hard will it be to be away from home for such a long time for the first time?

Overall, however, I am feeling very positive about my time in Amman and am excited to see what experiences it will bring.
