Ruth

Hello,

My name is Ruth and I am 19 years old. I come from a small village in the Rhineland-Palatinate region, near the border with France. From the end of August, I will be living in Bafoussam, Cameroon, for ten months.

Alongside my schoolwork, I have spent a lot of my time doing voluntary work in Germany, such as youth work in the local community, theatre projects at school and teaching German in a refugee camp in 2016, as I have always enjoyed working with people.

I am also interested in art and music, and I love going on spontaneous trips with friends.

I am very much looking forward to doing this voluntary service as it is something I have wanted to do for a long time, and I have found EMS to be an open-minded and trustworthy organisation. I hope that my time in Cameroon will further my personal development, helping me to develop more empathy for other cultures and broaden my worldview. This is why I see spending the next year abroad as a great opportunity.

In Bafoussam, I expect to work in a hospital and a school, as well as taking part in community life. I will be staying with a host family and meeting lots of new people. Currently, I am feeling a mixture of anticipation and uncertainty about my departure, and I am therefore looking forward to reporting to the readers of this blog on the progress of my voluntary service and my experiences and adventures, bit by bit.
