Hello everyone,
My name is Salome, I’m 19 years old, and I will be living and working in southern India for ten months, starting in October 2024.
Having finished my A-levels in spring 2024, I am now ready for an adventure before committing to an apprenticeship or degree course. I can really see myself doing voluntary work abroad after my A-levels, probably because I have a few role models in my family who have spent a year doing social work abroad themselves. In 2022, for example, I visited my sister at her placement in the Ivory Coast, where I experienced first-hand the value of making new connections and immersing oneself in foreign cultures.
I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity to spend ten months in a completely new country and to be able to trust that my placement at the Capron Hall Higher Secondary School for Girls, and the local people, will welcome me, my fellow volunteer Harriet, and help us settle into life there.
At the same time, with my departure now just under two months away, I have a great deal of respect for what lies ahead.
I’ll be posting regular updates about my time in India on this blog. If you’d like to follow my journey, please do pop back here from time to time.
There are 14 of us volunteers in total, four of whom will be based in India, and we will all be posting regular blog entries from autumn onwards. Please take a look at the others’ blogs too!
Thank you for your interest, and I hope to see you soon!
