Zoe

Hi there!

My name is Zoe, and I will be spending the next ten months at the Department for Development and Social Services in Ghana. I’m delighted that you’re interested in my voluntary work, and I’ll try to give you an insight into my experiences there over the coming months.

But first, a bit about me:

I am 18 years old, and I live with my parents, two younger sisters, and an aunt in a small German town. I successfully completed my A-levels at the end of June and I’m now looking forward to starting a new chapter. In my spare time, I enjoy drawing, playing sports such as kickboxing and swimming, and spending time with my sisters.

I spent the first ten years of my life in Thailand, where I attended an international school. This gave me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and religions from an early age. My curiosity and my enjoyment of learning from others has stayed with me, so it was relatively quick for me to decide that I would do a voluntary year abroad after finishing school.

After a long search and several applications, I finally secured a position at EMS. I am already counting down the days until I can start working in Accra, Ghana. At the beginning of September, I’ll begin a one-week language course to learn Twi. After that, I’ll be helping out with, or helping to shape, the many different projects.

These will range from workshops for children to environmental campaigns for adults.

I’ve already had the good fortune to meet Reverend Odjawo, my contact in Ghana. Everyone has been incredibly friendly so far and has told me a lot about the country and its people.

I’m excited about the new experiences that await me, but I’m also curious about the potential challenges, such as language and cultural differences.

I’d love to share my adventures with you, so please follow my blog over the next 10 months and join me in immersing ourselves in a completely different culture.
